There are several possibilities of getting to the department by public transport:

• The closest tram stop is Sensengasse, served by tram lines 37, 38, 40, 41, 42. Note that this stop only serves one direction, i.e. trams going downtown (towards Schottentor). Walking time to the department approx. 2 minutes.
• The second closest stop is Spitalgasse/Währinger Straße. Tram lines 5, 33, 37, 38, 40, 41, 42 (in all directions) stop here. Walking time to the department approx. 5 minutes.
• The nearest underground station is Währinger Straße/Volksoper on the underground line U6. Walking time to the department approx. 10–15 minutes, but you can also cut the journey short and take trams 40, 41, 42 (towards Schottentor) as far as Sensengasse (2 stops) and walk from there (2 mins).

Getting from Hauptbahnhof to the department

Vienna is well connected to the international rail network. If you arrive at Hauptbahnhof (the central railway station) the simplest route (though not the most direct one as the crow flies) will be as follows: 

• Take underground line U1 going in the direction of Leopoldau as far as Praterstern (approx. 10–15 minutes)
• Change to tram line 5 going in the direction of Westbahnhof as far as Währinger Straße/Spitalgasse (see above, approx. 20 minutes).
• Get off and walk to the department (approx. 5 mins).

In total (incl. waiting time and transfer) this shouldn't take more than 45 minutes.

Tickets

Note that a single ticket (Einzelfahrschein) will allow you to transfer between lines. 

At underground stations you will find vending machines that accept coins and cards. Single tickets will be €2.40, a day pass €5.80 (only available online) and then there are tickets for 24h (€8.00), 48h (€14.10), 72h (€17.10) as well as a (calendar) week (also €17.10).

Tickets can be bought at (some) tobacconists, news agents, vending machines in underground stations and online. Paper tickets that do not indicate the time from which they are valid must be validated before you enter any means of transport.

Getting from the airport to town

Vienna International Airport (https://www.viennaairport.com/en/passengers) is about 20 km from the city centre of Vienna, which can easily be reached by Airport Bus Shuttle, CAT (City Airport Train), train (S-Bahn) or taxi. Note that of all these the S-Bahn is the cheapest option.

Buses

The bus station is right in front of the Arrivals hall. Please refer to https://www.viennaairportlines.at/en/ for destinations in Vienna, prices are around €8. 

Trains

There are two train lines: Firstly, there is the CAT (City Airport Train, green colour), which is basically an overpriced tourist rip-off and we advise against it. (In addition, it only saves you 5–10 minutes over other trains). 

Secondly, there are regular trains (blue or red) run by the ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen, Austrian Federal Railways) and a ticket to any destination in Vienna will be €4.20 (to be bought beforehand at the counter or from a machine). 

The ÖBB trains will take you either to Praterstern station (line S7) or to Hauptbahnhof (the central railway station; long distance trains). In order to get from either one to department, have a look at the section "Getting from Hauptbahnhof to the department" above (and skip the part that gets you to Praterstern as appropriate).  

Taxis

A taxi from the airport will set you back around €40.
